‘American Idol’ contestant Keri Lynn Roche shares life lessons, career dreams, love for Eminem

DETROIT, MI – A Birmingham native who records music in Royal Oak and lives in Ann Arbor earned a trip to Hollywood on “American Idol,” but viewers won’t know how she did on the show for another three weeks.
Singer Keri Lynn Roche, a former Birmingham Seaholm graduate, confirmed that news to Mlive Detroit on Friday, and mentioned that her experience on the show shocked her because she didn’t necessarily want to audition on the popular FOX program the first place.
“I was never really interested in it,” said the 23-year-old Roche of the show. “It never seemed that appealing to me, but the experience was amazing.”
Roche remains diligent in honing her craft. She will perform her song “Medicine Man” at 6 p.m. Sunday on Tree Town Sound, broadcasted on Ann Arbor radio station 107.1 FM.

DETROIT, MI – A Birmingham native who records music in Royal Oak and lives in Ann Arbor earned a trip to Hollywood on “American Idol,” but viewers won’t know how she did on the show for another three weeks.

Singer Keri Lynn Roche, a former Birmingham Seaholm graduate, confirmed that news to Mlive Detroit on Friday, and mentioned that her experience on the show shocked her because she didn’t necessarily want to audition in the first place.

The song is extremely personal for Roche because she’s a recovering heroin addict who currently has two years of sobriety under her belt.

She considers Eminem, a Warren native, a source of inspiration because he also has addressed substance abuse and recovery in music.

“I gave up everything in my life for one thing (heroin),” Roche said of her darkest days. “I struggled with an addiction, so I can relate to all of (what Eminem has mentioned in his music).

“To see how he came out of that, to write such an amazing album (‘Recovery’), and speak so positively about recovering is something I’ve felt super-passionate about.”

Roche ran away from home and spent three years in Santa Monica, Calif. before she returned to Michigan and took steps to improve her personal life.

While in California, she performed often at a House of Blues and learned the hard way the challenges of the music industry.

“I pretty much left home with a guitar and a backpack,” she said.

Now that Roche is clean and has a more manageable life, she’s excited about the future and the opportunities her “American Idol” experience could bring.

She plans on spending a solid three months writing new material and will continue to perform in the Ann Arbor and Detroit areas.

“I want to focus on my career as an artist,” said Roche, who works during the day at an Ann Arbor screen printing shop, “and stay as authentic as I possibly can.”

Roche posted the photo above on her Facebook page that shows her with her “American Idol” golden ticket to Hollywood. She earned it after an audition in Chicago (where the picture was taken).

Roche also has a Reverbnation page with more songs and videos.
