Founders pizza bread makes New York magazine’s list of tops in the nation

Where do you go for the best pizza in West Michigan?

Everyone has a favorite place for pizza. What’s yours?

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — New York is known for a lot of things. Pizza is usually on that list.

Although I prefer a Chicago deep dish over the floppy oversized pieces New York serves up, you have to take notice when a New Yorker mentions a Founders Brewing menu item among the nation’s best pizzas.

According to Grub Street: New York, a food blog on NYMag.com, Founders’ French Bread Pizza may not be categorized as pizza per se, but it’s “great for soaking up booze, hence its inclusion on the menu at the tap room connected to Michigan’s celebrated Founders Brewing.”

Pizza was sliced into 10 categories by the blog: American New Wave “hipster” pies, Deep Dish, Thin Crust, Neapolitan (lightly sauced and thin), New York style “the mandatory folding type,” Sicilian thick and squared slices, a random category known simply as Slices, a Chef Driven category with pizza pies introduced by big name chefs, Frozen (yes, Digiorno is in there), and finally Outre.

Outre is where Founders pizza bread was placed. The category is listed as “notable pizzas that just don’t fit into a preexisting category. Instead, these are pizzas defined by their weirdness — gonzo toppings, odd forms, or even a strange ingredient prep.”

Other pizzas in the category alongside Founders’ dish include pies with pasta and meatballs, ghost chiles and even Fritos as toppings.

While it may not be a ringing endorsement for the best pizza around, it’s not a bad bit of press, and let’s be honest, pretty accurate. Pizza (even if it’s French bread, “hoagie style” pizza) and beer are soul mates.
