Kid Rock slams lip-syncers, wears camo, sips on mystery drink at Billboard Music Awards (video)

DETROIT, MI – Sunday night certainly wasn’t a quiet one for Kid Rock at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.

Rock, whose real name is Robert James Ritchie, slammed artists who lip-sync to pre-recorded music.

And if that wasn’t enough, he also wore camouflage and sipped a mystery drink out of mug as he presented Billboard’s Top Rap Song of the year.

Once Rock left the stage, he reportedly dropped the mic in rapper-like fashion.

This from Yahoo about Rock’s night:

“Let’s give it up for people lip-synching under pre-recorded music,” the singer said wryly, before presenting the honor to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for the hit tune “Thrift Shop.”

You can watch video of Kid Rock at the Billboard Music Awards below. Let us know what you think about his presentation in our comments section.

The band’s name is simply “Death,” and it was first active from 1971-76 before its resurgence in 2009 leading up to this film.

I purchased two Death albums in iTunes last week: “For the Whole World to See” and “Spiritual Mental Physical.” Both are quality punk albums with lyrics that are still relevant today.

The film will be available via Video On Demand on May 24.

Kid Rock’s Twitter page posted a message Wednesday that mentions he’s featured in the film:

New trailer 4 rockumentary A BAND CALLED DEATH at @rollingstone. Film features Kid Rock & other Detroit rockers: rol.st/15ERYBt

— Kid Rock (@KidRock) April 24, 2013

More details about the film found on its Vimeo website:

Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was
a band called Death. Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers
in the early ’70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a
few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed.
But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco.

Record companies found Death’s music— and band name—too intimidating,
and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even
completed one album. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic
family love story, A Band Called Death chronicles the incredible
fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a
dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience
several generations younger.

Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now
being credited as the first black punk band (hell…the first punk
band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true
rock pioneers.

Some early reviews of the film from various media outlets:

Variety – “An unexpected emotional docu on the revival of an African-American rock group that’s among those to usher in punk music.”

Huffington Post – “An indie film resets rock and roll.”

The Hollywood Reporter – “A better than fiction doc resurrects a seminal African-American rock band.”

Grantland – “‘A Band Called Death’ is entertaining but slight.”

DETROIT, MI – Kid Rock’s college-aged son Robert James will perform this summer at a new Detroit music festival in a historic and unique place.

Robert James is part of the lineup for Oakaloosa, a festival to be held July 27 at Historic Fort Wayne in southwest Detroit.

For more information, check out my previous post about the festival.

The lineup includes Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Trick Trick, Royce da ’59″, Girl Talk, Jessica Hernandez and more.

Festival passes are $45 and are available for purchase on the Oakaloosa website.

Robert James has appeared to be working on his craft for several years now and has experience doing shows in his home state.

He also has several songs and EPs available online that have appeared to get positive reviews. You can check out some of Robert James’ work on his Reverbnation page.

Robert James clearly loves his father, Detroit and our city’s sports teams.

If you go on Robert James’ Facebook page, you’ll see plenty of photos of him wearing “Made in Detroit” apparel” and posts with Detroit references, including a shout-out to Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera

A photo of Robert James and his father can be spotted near the end of a humorous politically-themed movie Kid Rock released last week with actor Sean Penn.

Kid Rock also mentions his son during the film.

Below is Robert James’ rendition of “Let’s Roll,” a hit song his dad and Yelawolf collaborated on.

Kid Rock’s $20 ‘Rebel Soul’ tickets promotion will be tough for industry to duplicate, expert says

DETROIT, MI – Kid Rock, Live Nation and Ticketmaster appear to be entertainment trailblazers with a $20 tickets promotion for his summer “Rebel Soul” tour that might not ever be duplicated in the industry.
The idea of offering $20 tickets for all shows in every section, including seven shows at Clarkston’s DTE Energy Music Theatre, sends a bold message to Kid Rock’s fans that their guy is determined to be original in a crowded marketplace, said Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief Pollstar, an industry publication.
“I think Kid Rock plans to be around for a while and is probably hoping to be touring five years from now and still making a good living,” Bongiovanni said. “He’s treating his audience very well, and the thing about this promotion is that everyone can see it’s a good deal – whether it’s the beer prices or the $20 tickets.”

DETROIT, MI – Kid Rock, Live Nation and Ticketmaster appear to be entertainment trailblazers with a $20 tickets promotion for his summer “Rebel Soul” tour that might not ever be duplicated in the industry.

The idea of offering $20 tickets for all shows in every section, including seven shows at Clarkston’s DTE Energy Music Theatre, sends a bold message to Kid Rock’s fans that their guy is determined to be and stay original in a crowded marketplace, said Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief Pollstar, an industry publication.

The marketplace in Metro Detroit is jam-packed this spring and summer. Bob Seger, Kendrick Lamar and The Black Crowes kicked of this month an incredibly busy year of concerts for the region.

Bongiovanni said it’s unlikely other performers or acts can duplicate Kid Rock’s $20 promotion unless they teamed up with a Live Nation, Ticketmaster, or other promoters and offer the same deal in venues operated and serviced by the same companies.

The idea of having a multiple city tour in concert venues owned and operated by a variety of separate entities would likely make a $20 promotion – or something similar – practically impossible, Bongiovanni said.

“This deal is only possible because Live Nation bought into it,” Bongiovanni said. “Kid Rock is playing all Live Nation facilities, and obviously the fact the facilities were able to lower the concession prices was big. They made that deal for the entire tour. Unless that that cooperation happens (in the future), you’re not going to see a lot of other acts going out and doing it.

“You can’t do a conventional tour where you’re going out to 50 different arenas with 50 different operators and cut the same kind of deal.”

Kid Rock has admitted publicly this promotion is a risky move.

He told Rolling Stone this month that he’s “been meeting with Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino for years, trying to figure out how to fix the concert industry” and added entertainers are “all so overpaid.”

Bongiovanni said he doesn’t expect Kid Rock, Live Nation or Ticketmaster to get rich from the promotion, but does expect money made.

““Nobody is going to get really rich on this thing,” Bongiovanni said. “Although, I would hope in this day and age you can still make money on a $20 ticket. You may not get fabulously rich, but we’re only 20 to 30 years removed from when that was the conventional ticket price.”

The dates for Kid Rock’s seven shows at DTE: Aug. 9-11, Aug. 14, Aug. 16-17 and Aug. 19. As of 2:30 p.m. Thursday, some tickets appeared to still be available for those seven shows via Ticketmaster.

The only way Bongionvanni said Kid Rock’s $20 promotion as a bad moves was if there were problems selling the tickets. That doesn’t appear to be the case.

“You know, $20 is the kind of ticket price where you don’t really have to plan six months in advance to budget for it,” Bongiovanni said. “It can be more of a spur of the moment purchase. And the fact they are having the $4 beers means it’s not going to cost you a fortune to go out and enjoy yourself.”

Although Kid Rock’s promotion is an innovative move, Bongiovanni doesn’t expect it to help drive ticket prices down for shows throughout the industry anytime soon.

““The biggest artists continue to push the envelope,” Bongiovanni said. “At what point do The Rolling Stones (and other bands) price themselves out of the real world? It hasn’t happened yet, but (high prices) definitely limit the audience that can attend.”

Would you go see Kid Rock for $20 (plus fees)? Did you buy tickets for any of his shows? What do you think of his promotion? What’s your ticket price threshold for a concert?
