STERLING HEIGHTS, MI — I’ll be honest, when it comes to reality TV shows such as “American Idol,” I get tired of all the hype.

“Best Season Ever!” “Most Controversial!” “See the judges duke it out!”

But as we get ready for tonight’s Season 12 premiere of “American Idol” 2013, I can honestly say — Please believe the hype!

Nicki Minaj is AWESOME.

Everything about her just pops off the screen!

Of course, I was watching a one-hour, edited preview of the two-night Season Premiere (8-10 p.m. Jan. 16 and 17, Fox), and that might have added to my excitement.

And I was sitting in a movie theater with a few hundred die-hard fans at AMC Forum 30 who cheered loudly for the rap/pop star known for her color wigs, outfits and guest spots on probably ever single released over the last two years.

The Detroit-area location was one of 11 cities in the country to get this advance preview. That was followed by a Q&A with the judges and host.

But it was new judge Nicki Minaj who stole the show. And I suspect it will be that way the whole season.

My Top 3 Reasons “American Idol” Season 12 Could be the Best Season Ever!

1. Nicki Minaj vs. Mariah Carey: It’s real. It’s obvious. And it’s so entertaining. Wait until you see the signature “eye rolls” from Nicki every time Miss Diva Mariah Carey opens her mouth.

2. Nicki Minaj vs. Keith Urban: I betcha the country superstar thought his wife Nicole Kidman was a handful. Now he finds himself caught in a “delicious Diva crossfire” — at least that’s what I’m calling it! He bangs his head on the judges table in one sequence that’s downright scene stealing.

3. Nicki Minaj vs. The Contestants: She’s loud and opinionated, that much we find out early. But she also has a softer side and a sincere connection to each hopeful. And their situation. Nicki shares her own struggles of making it in the business, and you immediately understand that underneath all the makeup and wigs you have an entertainer who takes none of it for granted.

It is a Nicki Minja lovefest, and you will be glad you tuned in.

Trust me.
